Michael Hayden: “The problem I have with the Internet is that it’s anonymous”

Former NSA and CIA director Michael Hayden stood on the pulpit of a church across from the White House on Sunday and declared Gmail the preferred online service of terrorists. As part of an adult education forum at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Hayden gave a wide ranging speech on “the tension between security and liberty.”

During the speech, he specifically defended Section 702 of the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act (FISA), which provides the legal basis for the PRISM program. In doing so, Hayden claimed “Gmail is the preferred Internet service provider of terrorists worldwide,” presumably meaning online service rather than the actual provider of Internet service. He added: “I don’t think you’re going to see that in a Google commercial, but it’s free, it’s ubiquitous, so of course it is.”

At one point, Hayden expressed a distaste for online anonymity, saying “The problem I have with the Internet is that it’s anonymous.” But he noted, there is a struggle over that issue even inside government. The issue came to a head during the Arab Spring movement when the State Department was funding technology to protect the anonymity of activists so governments could not track down or repress their voices.

“We have a very difficult time with this,” Hayden said. He then asked, “is our vision of the World Wide Web the global digital commons — at this point you should see butterflies flying here and soft background meadow-like music — or a global free fire zone?” Given that Hayden also compared the Internet to the wild west and Somalia, Hayden clearly leans toward the “global free fire zone” vision of the Internet.

Syrian Rebels Brainwashing Population to Accept Extremist Islam

Syria: nearly half rebel fighters are jihadists or hardline Islamists, says IHS Jane’s report

Ben Farmer
London Telegraph
September 15, 2013

The new study by IHS Jane’s, a defence consultancy, estimates there are around 10,000 jihadists – who would include foreign fighters – fighting for powerful factions linked to al-Qaeda..

Another 30,000 to 35,000 are hardline Islamists who share much of the outlook of the jihadists, but are focused purely on the Syrian war rather than a wider international struggle.

ISIS has also begun a programme of “indoctrination” of civilians in rebel-held areas, trying to educate Syria’s traditionally moderate Sunni Muslims into a more hard-line interpretation of Islam.

In early September, the group distributed black backpacks with the words “Islamic State of Iraq” stamped on them. They also now control schools in Aleppo where young boys are reportedly taught to sing jihadist anthems.

“It seems it is some sort of a long-term plan to brainwash the children and recruit potential fighters,” said Elie Wehbe, a Lebanese journalists who is conducting research into these activities.

Eric Holder, IRS officials coached tax-exempt black ministers on how to engage in political activity

Daily Caller
September 13, 2013

Attorney General Eric Holder and IRS officials advised black ministers on how to engage in political activity during the 2012 election without violating their tax-exempt status.

Holder, then-IRS commissioner Douglas Shulman, and Peter Lorenzetti, a senior official in the scandal-plagued agency’s exempt organizations division, participated in a May 2012 training session for black ministers from the Conference of National Black Churches at the U.S. Capitol hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). Holder spoke at the event.

“We’re going to, first of all, equip them with the information they need to know about what they can say and what they cannot say in the church that would violate their 501(c)(3) status with the IRS,” said then-CBC chairman Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Democrat from Missouri. “In fact, we’re going to have the IRS administrator there. We’re going to have Attorney General Eric Holder there…the ACLU.”

Poll: Fewer Americans Than Ever Trust Gov’t to Handle Problems

Joy Wilke and Frank Newport
Gallup.com
Sept. 13, 2013

Americans’ trust and confidence in the federal government’s ability to handle international problems has reached an all-time low, with 49% saying they have a great deal or a fair amount of confidence, two percentage points below the previous low of 51% recorded in 2007.

Americans trust in government is lower than its ever been... ever.

Americans’ trust in government is lower than its ever been… ever.

These new data come from Gallup’s annual Governance survey, conducted Sept. 5-8, 2013, while Congress was debating the use of military force in Syria, but prior to President Barack Obama’s nationally televised address on Syria, and Russia’s proposal to avert U.S. military action.

Between 57% and 66% of Americans said they had a great deal or a fair amount of confidence in the U.S. government to handle international problems during Obama’s first term. This represents a generally higher level of confidence than Americans expressed during the latter years of the Bush administration, when the U.S. was engaged in protracted wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Prepare For Tough Times If Your Job Has Anything To Do With Real Estate Or Mortgages

Michael Snyder
Economic Collapse Blog
September 12, 2013

If you have a job that involves building homes, buying homes, selling homes or that is in any way related to the mortgage industry, you might want to start searching for alternate employment. Seriously. Interest rates are starting to rise dramatically, and mortgage lenders such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase are all cutting thousands of mortgage-related jobs. Last week, mortgage refinance activity plunged to the lowest level that we have seen since June 2009 and total mortgage activity dropped to the lowest level since October 2008. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning. Mortgage rates closely mirror the yield on 10 year U.S. Treasuries, the the yield on 10 year U.S. Treasuries has nearly doubled since early May. But it is still only sitting at about 3 percent right now. As I have written about previously, it has a ton of room to go up before it hits “normal” historical levels, and so do mortgage rates. As I noted the other day, some analysts believe that the yield on 10 year U.S. Treasuries is going to hit 7 percent eventually. If that happens, mortgage rates will be more than double what they are today. And we have already seen the average rate on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage go from 3.35 percent in May to 4.57 percent last week. If interest rates continue to rise we could be heading for a “housing Armageddon” that will make the last housing crash look like a Sunday picnic.

The mini-housing bubble that we have been enjoying for the last couple of years is coming to an abrupt end. It doesn’t matter what the mainstream media is telling you about a “sustainable” housing recovery. Just look at how the big mortgage lenders are behaving. They know the gig is up. According to Bloomberg, Bank of America has just announced that they will be eliminating 2,100 mortgage-related jobs…

Bank of America Corp., the second-largest U.S. lender, will eliminate about 2,100 jobs and shutter 16 mortgage offices as rising interest rates weaken loan demand, said two people with direct knowledge of the plans.

Would they be doing that if we were really heading into a “sustainable housing recovery”?

And Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase are also both eliminatingthousands of mortgage-related jobs

Mortgage lenders are paring staff as higher interest rates discourage refinancing and cast doubt on how long the housing market rebound will last. Wells Fargo Co., the biggest U.S. home lender, plans more than 2,300 job cuts, and JPMorgan Chase Co. may dismiss 15,000.

Would they be doing this if they thought that brighter days were ahead?

Of course not.

In fact, Well Fargo just announced that it expects to make 30 percent fewer home loans this quarter because of rapidly rising interest rates.

It’s over folks.

The mini-housing bubble that the mainstream media has been hyping so much is over.

If your job has anything to do with real estate or mortgages, it is time to start thinking about a career change.

This is especially true if your job is related to refinancing mortgages. All of the smart people have already refinanced. As rates continue to rise rapidly, the only ones that will be refinancing are really stupid people. According to Zero Hedge, mortgage refinance activity has already dropped by a whopping 70 percent since early May…

For the 16th of the last 18 weeks, mortgage refinance activity plunged (dropping 20% this week alone).Since early May, when the dreaded word “Taper” was first uttered, refis have collapsed over 70%. With mortgage servicers and providers large and small laying people off, it seems hard for even the most egregiously biased bull to still suggest that the housing recovery is sustainable.

And this rise in interest rates is just getting started. The Federal Reserve has not even begun to “taper” yet. Once that starts happening, the consequences could be quite dramatic

“In early 1994, when the U.S. recovery gained strength, the Fed started a tightening cycle and bond markets crashed not only in the U.S. but also around the world,” European Central Bank Executive Board member Joerg Asmussen said on Tuesday.

“If spillovers were large in 1994, we can expect them to be even larger today in an even more deeply interconnected world,” he added in the text of a speech for delivery in Brussels.

Of course when the Federal Reserve “tapers” their quantitative easing it won’t really be “tightening” as much as it will be slowing down the pace at which they are recklessly creating tens of billions of dollars out of thin air. But the effect will be similar to what we saw back in 1994.

As interest rates rise, it will become much more expensive to buy a home and much more difficult to sell a home. To give you an idea of how dramatically interest rates can affect housing affordability, I wanted to share some numbers from one of my previous articles

A year ago, the 30 year rate was sitting at 3.66 percent. The monthly payment on a 30 year, $300,000 mortgage at that rate would be $1374.07.

If the 30 year rate rises to 8 percent, the monthly payment on a 30 year, $300,000 mortgage at that rate would be $2201.29.

Does 8 percent sound crazy to you?

It shouldn’t. 8 percent was considered to be normal back in the year 2000.

Are you starting to get the picture?

As interest rates go up, home prices will have to fall. Otherwise, nobody will be able to afford them.

In the end, we could end up with tens of millions more homeowners that are substantially “underwater” on their mortgages.

So who is to blame?

The Federal Reserve of course.

They created this bubble by forcing interest rates down to record low levels.

At some point it was inevitable that interest rates would start reverting back to more “normal” levels, and that “adjustment” is going to be immensely painful for the U.S. economy.

As we saw back in 2008 and 2009, when the housing industry suffers the entire economy suffers.

And the higher that interest rates go, the more suffering there will be.

So let us hope and pray that interest rates do not go any higher, but let us also start preparing for the very worst.

Putin Uses NYT Op-Ed to Warn US Against Syria Strike

RIA Novosti
September 12, 2013

MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) – A potential US strike on Syria is fraught with dangerous consequences, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned in an op-ed he wrote for the New York Times.

Washington is currently contemplating a strike on Syria as retaliation for a deadly August 21 chemical weapons attack in a Damascus suburb, which it has attributed to the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Official Damascus has blamed the attack on rebel forces, and Russia has tentatively backed its long-time ally, while calling for further investigation.

“Recent events surrounding Syria have prompted me to speak directly to the American people and their political leaders. It is important to do so at a time of insufficient communication between our societies,” Putin said in the op-ed, entitled “A Plea for Caution from Russia,” which was posted on the US newspaper’s website Wednesday.

“The potential strike by the United States against Syria, despite strong opposition from many countries and major political and religious leaders, including the pope, will result in more innocent victims and escalation, potentially spreading the conflict far beyond Syria’s borders,” he said.

“A strike would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism. It could undermine multilateral efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and further destabilize the Middle East and North Africa,” Putin wrote.

“It could throw the entire system of international law and order out of balance,” he said in the article.

The unrest in Syria began in March 2011 and later escalated into a civil war. More than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict so far, according to UN estimates.

Putin reiterated Russia’s position that the Syrian civil war should be resolved by peaceful means.

“From the outset, Russia has advocated peaceful dialogue enabling Syrians to develop a compromise plan for their own future. We are not protecting the Syrian government, but international law,” he wrote.

“We need to use the United Nations Security Council and believe that preserving law and order in today’s complex and turbulent world is one of the few ways to keep international relations from sliding into chaos,” Putin said in his op-ed in the New York Times.

He underlined that the current international law only permits use of force “in self-defense or by the decision of the Security Council,” adding that all other ways are “unacceptable under the United Nations Charter and would constitute an act of aggression.”

Noting that “no one doubts that poison gas was used in Syria,” Putin said the gas “was used not by the Syrian Army, but by opposition forces, to provoke intervention by their powerful foreign patrons, who would be siding with the fundamentalists.”

Syria’s foreign minister, Walid Muallem, said Tuesday his country was ready to give up chemical weapons and join an international convention banning them.

US Secretary of State John Kerry meets Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva on Thursday for hastily organized talks on a Russian plan to prevent a US attack on Syria by placing the war-torn country’s chemical weapons under international control.

Speaking on the Al-Mayadeen pan-Arabic satellite television channel, Russia’s ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Zasypkin, said Moscow had handed over to the UN Security Council evidence that chemical weapons in Syria were used by rebel forces.

The Russian president voiced concern that “military intervention in internal conflicts in foreign countries has become commonplace for the United States.”

He expressed doubt that it could be in the United States’ long-term interest and added that many people worldwide “increasingly see America not as a model of democracy but as relying solely on brute force.”

Noting that his working and personal relationship with US President Barack Obama was “marked by growing trust,” Putin said: “I welcome the president’s interest in continuing the dialogue with Russia on Syria.”

The Russian leader said he and Obama “must work together to keep this hope alive.”

“If we can avoid force against Syria, this will improve the atmosphere in international affairs and strengthen mutual trust. It will be our shared success and open the door to cooperation on other critical issues,” Putin wrote in the article.

David Petraeus Ambushed, Branded “War Criminal” by Protesters

Former CIA director mobbed on first day of new job

Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com
September 12, 2013

A video shows former CIA director David Petraeus being ambushed by protesters on the streets of New York and branded a “war criminal.”

The footage shows Petraeus walking to his first day of his new job as a visiting professor at The City University of New York (CUNY). Petraeus seems unaffected as students hurl insults, labeling him a “war criminal,” a “scumbag,” and a “fascist.”

“You’ve got blood all over you! I can smell you!” “You disgusting imperialist!” yells one protester.

The ambush was organized by an organization calling itself the Ad Hoc Committee, a group of CUNY students attempting to drive out “Death Squad” Petraeus and eliminate the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program.

Both the aggressive behavior of the students and Petraeus’ actions as a military official in Iraq and Afghanistan led the Atlantic Wire to conclude that, “Neither side looks good.”

After training Iraqi forces during the U.S. occupation, Petraeus was accused of ordering the intentional drone bombing funerals and other civilian targets in Afghanistan, a war crime under the International Criminal Court.

Petraeus has been a consistent supporter of military intervention in Syria and reiterated his stance during an appearance at Page Auditorium, Duke University last night.

The former CIA director also angered privacy advocates last year when he hailed the “Internet of things” as a transformational boon for “clandestine tradecraft”. In other words, people filling their homes with so-called “smart” devices would mean the CIA wouldn’t have to implant bugs since people would be wiretapping themselves.

German paper: Intercepts caught Assad rejecting requests to use chemical weapons

Matthew Schofield
McClatchy
September 10, 2013

Syrian President Bashar Assad has repeatedly rejected requests from his field commanders for approval to use chemical weapons, according to a report this weekend in a German newspaper.

The report in Bild am Sonntag, which is a widely read and influential national Sunday newspaper, reported that the head of the German Foreign Intelligence agency, Gerhard Schindler, last week told a select group of German lawmakers that intercepted communications had convinced German intelligence officials that Assad did not order or approve what is believed to be a sarin gas attack on Aug. 21 that killed hundreds of people in Damascus’ eastern suburbs.

The Obama administration has blamed the attack on Assad. The evidence against Assad was described over the weekend as common sense by White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

NATO Leader: Syria Not To Be Trusted

Says “it’s evident that Syrian regime is responsible” for chemical weapons attack

Adan Salazar
Infowars.com
Sept. 10, 2013

As Syria edges closer to reaching a compromise over securing and destroying their nuclear arsenal, NATO leader Anders Fogh Rasmussen is warning the U.S. and its allies to be weary of Assad’s acquiescence, thereby urging the U.S. to keep the prospect of military strikes on the table.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen speaks in Austin, Texas.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen speaks in Austin, Texas.

“There’s a lot of public evidence,” Rasmussen told Public Radio International today, adding, “The attacks were launched from areas controlled by the government into areas controlled by the opposition. It doesn’t make sense for the opposition to attack their own people with chemical weapons in areas they already control, and the opposition doesn’t have the capacity to conduct such an attack of that scope and scale.”

The U.S.-led intergovernmental military alliance hadn’t joined the conversation over Syria’s alleged chemical weapons use, but today publicly condemned the attacks and placed blame on the Al-Assad regime.

Amid fears of an all-out regional conflict, NATO has also taken steps to protect its member state Turkey by supplying them with Patriot missile batteries.

“If the horrendous chemical attacks remain unanswered, it might send a very dangerous signal to not only the regime in Damascus, but to dictators all over the world, that chemical weapons and other weapons of mass destruction can be used without any consequences,” Rasmussen said.

Rasmussen’s statements are in stark contrast to the position he held in late May when he told CBS News that military involvement in Syria could “have unpredictable regional repercussions.” “And this is a reason why it’s important to focus on finding a political solution,” Rasmussen stated at the time.

The NATO Secretary General’s sentiments now more strongly echo those of Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, who recently issued a joint statement urging Congressmen still on the fence over whether or not to conduct air strikes that Russia’s proposal should build an even stronger case to go to war.

“Today’s development should make Members of Congress more willing to vote yes,” McCain and Graham said in a joint statement. “This will give the President additional leverage to press Russia and Syria to make good on their proposal to take the weapons of mass destruction out of Assad’s hands.”

Secretary of State John Kerry has also sidestepped Russia’s proposal – which would have Syria surrender its WMD to the international community – even though he himself was responsible for the off-the-cuff remark that led Russia to pursue the current course of action. The use of force “absolutely should not be off the table,” Kerry told CNN earlier today.

With Syria and Russia seemingly willing to do what it takes to avoid military intervention at all costs, it should be painfully evident who the real terrorists are and who are the peace-seekers.

Sen. Cruz: I Don’t Think Obama ‘Has the Authority’ to Order Syria Strike

Benjamin Bell
ABC News
September 8, 2013

Contradicting President Obama’s assertion, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas said this morning on “This Week” that the president does not have the authority to order a military strike on Syria without Congressional approval.

“I don’t think he has the authority,” Cruz told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.

“It would be contrary to the Constitution,” he added later, when Stephanopoulos asked him if acting without Congressional approval would be an impeachable offense, as some Republicans have suggested.

Benghazi Whistleblower: I’ve Been ‘Punished’ for Speaking Out

Andrew Johnson
National Review
September 8, 2013

Gregory Hicks, the former deputy chief of mission in Libya who testified before Congress about the 9/11 attacks on an American diplomatic facility earlier this year, believes he has been “punished” for speaking out about the Obama administration’s response the night of the attack.

He said he believes at least two of the Americans lost that night could have been saved if the United States had responded in time.

Americans losing homes for unpaid property taxes as little as $44

Michael Sallah, Debbie Cenziper, and Steven Rich
Washington Post
September 8, 2013

On the day Bennie Coleman lost his house, the day armed U.S. marshals came to his door and ordered him off the property, he slumped in a folding chair across the street and watched the vestiges of his 76 years hauled to the curb.

Movers carted out his easy chair, his clothes, his television. Next came the things that were closest to his heart: his Marine Corps medals and photographs of his dead wife, Martha. The duplex in Northeast Washington that Coleman bought with cash two decades earlier was emptied and shuttered. By sundown, he had nowhere to go.

All because he didn’t pay a $134 property tax bill.

Nuclear disaster: Radiation levels at Fukushima would now be fatal within hours

Justin McCurry

The crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has radiation leaks strong enough to deliver a fatal dose within hours, Japanese authorities have revealed, as the government prepares to step in to help contain leaks of highly toxic water at the site.

On Wednesday the country’s nuclear regulation authority said radiation readings near water storage tanks at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have increased to a new high, with emissions above the ground near one group of tanks were as high as 2,200 millisieverts [mSv] per hour – a rise of 20% from the previous high.

Earlier this week the plant’s operator, Tepco, said workers had measured radiation at 1,800 mSv an hour near a storage tank.

Congress Prepares Resolution Allowing Obama to Attack Syria

Constitutional scholar: resolution eerily like previous Gulf of Tonkin resolution

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars.com
September 4, 2013

Despite Secretary of State John Kerry’s assurance that Arab countries will pay for an attack on Syria, opposition to the ill-conceived operation is growing.

Gulf of Tonkin falso flag resulted in escalating the Vietnam War that killed more than 3 million Southeast Asians and nearly 60,000 Americans.

Gulf of Tonkin false flag resulted in the Vietnam War that killed more than 3 million Southeast Asians and nearly 60,000 Americans.

The National Review Online quotes Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona. Salmon said hundreds of constituents – with the exception of two – have called his office urging him to resist the move in Congress to vote in favor of attacking Syria.

“I don’t see any national-security imperative for our country at all. Both sides in this equation are bad actors,” Salmon said. “Other than saving face for the president, I don’t understand what we would be doing,” he added.

Salmon also told the NRO few believe Obama’s strikes will be surgical. “Nobody believes this is going to be a couple surgical strikes,” he said dismissively.

The Arizona congressman said that he believes Obama will flaunt the will of Congress and attack Syria if Congress fails to issue an authorization. It will be a full-blown constitutional crisis if Obama overrides the will of Congress and would represent the “most significant flouting of separation of powers in this nation,” the congressman said.

Regardless of polls showing an overwhelming number of Americans opposing any military action against Syria, on Wednesday the Senate worked overtime to draft a resolution allowing Obama to strike the Arab nation under what the Washinton Times described as “very tight circumstances.”

The resolution – drafted by Democrat Senator Robert Menendez and Republican counterpart Bob Corker of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee – provides Obama with the ability to “use the armed forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate in a limited and tailored manner against legitimate military targets in Syria.”

“Our negotiations have led to a much narrower authorization that provides for the appropriate use of force while limiting the scope and duration of military action, prohibiting boots on the ground, and requiring the Obama administration to submit their broader plan for Syria,” Corker said in a statement late Tuesday, according to the Times.

Louis Fisher, scholar in residence at the Constitution Project and former long-time expert for the Congressional Research Service on separation of powers issues, doubts the resolution will impose significant limitation on Obama and the Pentagon.

“What could possibly be the meaning of ‘limited and tailored?’ I doubt if I’ve ever seen the word ‘tailored’ in a bill,” Fisher said. “Even if the ‘intent’ of Congress is a limited war, war has its own momentum.”

The resolution is reminiscent of the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin resolution used by President Johnson to draw the United States into Vietnam.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident is a notorious false flag incident, a fact underscored by an exhaustive history of American signals intelligence (SIGINT) in the Vietnam War that was declassified and released by the National Security Agency in 2008.

Israel claims joint US missile launch in Mediterranean for ‘target practice’

RT
September 3, 2013

Russia’s early warning radars detected the launch of two ballistic rockets in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Russia’s Defense Ministry stated. Israel later claimed responsibility for firing the target test rockets.

The launch took place at 06:16 GMT Tuesday, according to Russia’s Ministry of Defense.

The trajectory of the missiles is reported to have been from the central part of the Mediterranean Sea towards the eastern landmass. Both rockets have allegedly fallen into the sea, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Russia’s President Putin has already been informed about the incident by Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu.

The Syrian embassy in Moscow currently has no information on the incident.

There were no rocket attack signals or blasts in Damascus, the Russian embassy in Syria noted.

Syria’s missile warning system has not detected any rockets landing on their territory, a Syrian security source told Lebanese channel al-Manar TV.

Initially, the Israeli military apparently had no data on the launch either. However, later Israel claimed a joint missile launch with the US in the Mediterranean Sea. Israeli authorities pointed out that they tested an “anchor” target missile used to check how well the anti-missile system known as “Arrow-2″ functions.

US Navy Forces haven’t fired any missiles from vessels deployed in the Mediterranean, according to a spokesman.

The UK has stressed that they “have nothing to do” with the launch.

A NATO spokesman said the alliance was trying to verify the reports. Until then, the bloc will not comment on the incident.

Armavir, an early warning system against missile attack, is situated in southern Russia. It is run by the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces. They provide radar coverage of the Middle East. There are two radars there, with one of them facing southwest and the other southeast.

Obama’s Syria Attack Resolution Authorizes Boots on the Ground

Plan for military intervention greases skids for war throughout the region, says Harvard professor

Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com
September 3, 2013

The Obama administration’s draft resolution for military intervention which Congress is set to vote on next week is so broad that it would authorize boots on the ground as well as regime change and open ended war throughout the entire region, according to Harvard Law School professor Jack Goldsmith.

Image: Wikimedia Commons

Goldsmith served as Assistant Attorney General, Office of Legal Counsel from 2003–2004, and Special Counsel to the Department of Defense from 2002–2003.

In an article for the Lawfare Blog, Goldsmith reveals how the White House’s proposed Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) would give Obama the power to deploy ground troops in Syria, despite the administration’s claims that it is only seeking to carry out “limited” strikes that have no connection to regime change.

“The phrase “The President is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate” would include authorization for ground troops, should the President decide they were “necessary and appropriate,” writes Goldsmith.

Goldsmith points out that although the resolution authorizes the President to use the US military to “protect the United States and its allies and partners against the threat posed by (chemical weapons),” it does not limit the countries or groups against which this mandate applies.

“The proposed AUMF focuses on Syrian WMD but is otherwise very broad. It authorizes the President to use any element of the U.S. Armed Forces and any method of force. It does not contain specific limits on targets – either in terms of the identity of the targets (e.g. the Syrian government, Syrian rebels, Hezbollah, Iran) or the geography of the targets,” writes Goldsmith, emphasizing that the language does not limit military force to the territory of Syria, merely that it must be connected to WMD use in the Syrian conflict.

The AUMF also contains no time limit for when this mandate expires without further congressional approval, meaning it creates the pretext for an open ended war that would “permit the President to use military force against any target anywhere in the world (including Iran or Lebanon) as long as the President, in his discretion, determines that the the target has a connection to WMD in the Syrian civil war.”

In response to complaints that the authorization is far too broad and would possibly be rejected by Congress on this basis, the Washington Post reports the the administration may be preparing to, “rewrite the proposed resolution to clarify that any operation would be limited in scope and duration and would not include the use of ground troops.”

Former vice chief of staff of the US Army General Jack Keane told BBC Radio 4 today that Obama’s claim that the planned missile strike on Syria will merely be an act of punishment for the use of chemical weapons and not intended to sway the course of the conflict or damage Assad’s military capacity is not the case.

“What he has told the two senators is that he also intends to assist the opposition forces, so he is going to degrade Assad’s military capacity and he is going to assist and upgrade the opposition forces with training assistance,” said Keane, adding that the attack plan has “much more substance than we were led to believe”.

Secretary of State John Kerry and another unnamed senior State Department official have both made it clear that the Obama administration will proceed with an attack on Syria whether Congress gives the green light or not.

Analysis: Putin sees chance to turn tables on Obama at G20

Timothy Heritage
Reuters
September 1, 2013

Less than three months after Vladimir Putin was cast as a pariah over Syria at the last big meeting of world leaders, the Russian president has glimpsed a chance to turn the tables on Barack Obama.

The U.S. president’s dilemma over a military response to an alleged poison gas attack in Syria means Obama is the one who is under more pressure going into a G20 summit in St Petersburg on Thursday and Friday.

Obama stepped back from the brink on Saturday, delaying any imminent strike to seek approval from the U.S. Congress.

Court denies access to White House visitor logs

LA Times
September 1, 2013

A federal appeals court ruled Friday that White House visitor logs for the president and most of his staff are not public information subject to disclosure requirements of the Freedom of Information Act.

The 3-0 decision would keep the visitor records confidential for up to 12 years after President Obama leaves office.

The appeals court ruling dealt a defeat to a private group that asked the Secret Service for all White House visitor logs from Obama’s first seven months in office.

Paul: 50/50 chance that House will vote down Syria authorization

Carrie Dann
NBC News
September 1, 2013

A leading skeptic of U.S. intervention in conflicts abroad said Sunday that that he believes there is only a “50/50″ chance that the GOP-controlled House will vote to authorize the use of U.S military force in the Syria.

“I think it’s at least 50/50 whether the House will vote down involvement in the Syrian war,” Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said on NBC’s Meet the Press.

“I think the Senate will rubber stamp what [Obama] wants but I think the House will be a much closer vote,” he added. “And there are a lot of questions we have to ask.”
